Alexander Building Construction Co. recently completed a three-story addition to the Buckhorn Office Building for Geisinger Health System in Bloomsburg, which provided an additional 37,025 square feet of administrative office space. Construction began in August of 2011 and was completed in 10 months.
A part of the Butz Family of companies, Alexander worked collaboratively with Geisinger Health System and the architect/engineer, Borton-Lawson, to ensure minimal disruption to business operations that were ongoing in the existing building throughout construction. Coordination and extensive pre-planning was critical on all aspects of the project, according to a news release. Alexander also constructed the original 94,000-square-foot building in 2009 which was designed for this expansion.
"High praise and credit must be given to our project team and to our client and design partners," says Rick Seitz, president of Alexander Building Construction Co. "The project team's commitment to maintaining Geisinger's access to the existing building and a collaborative approach to the project's goals were a crucial component of the successful completion of this project. Our team also led the building information modeling process during design and construction resulting in an as-built model of the building and its materials and equipment that Geisinger can now use to maintain the building and each component's life cycle."
Along with increased office space, the news release said features of this project include:
A three-story atrium connecting the existing building with the addition
An expansive roof skylight allowing significant natural light into the atrium and perimeter offices
Utility upgrades included an underground rainwater collection system to collect and utilize rainwater and also serve as an emergency water supply back-up for the HVAC system/cooling tower
The existing parking lot was expanded and a new parking lot was added to provide additional spaces for the added occupancy of the addition. A walking trail surrounding the entire facility was also added for employee wellness. The project was completed safely without any recordable accidents or injuries.
"As with all of our previous projects, it was a pleasure working with Geisinger Health System on this latest endeavor," says Seitz. "It speaks to the professionalism and expertise of our project team that Geisinger continues to request our construction management services on their new projects."
