Regarding the Cliff Rieders column Aug. 12, the McCarthy who perpetrated nasty political smears in the 1950s was "Tail Gunner" Joe McCarthy, representing Wisconsin in the U.S. Senate, and not Eugene McCarthy, who served Minnesota in the same capacity.
Joe McCarthy was an infamous demagogue who initiated the Red Scare in the 50s. Eugene McCarthy was a statesman of the highest order who ran for president in 1968 and forced the unpopular incumbent, Lyndon Johnson, to quit his re-election campaign. I do share Mr. Reider's admiration for President Eisenhower. Ike was a tough and very wise politician who led the U.S. into peace and prosperity during his eight year regime. Let the gods of history be appeased.
