William J. Powell Jr., 82, of Jersey Shore, died on Friday morning, Aug. 24, 2012.
Mr. Powell was born July 2, 1930, in Taylor, Pa., to William and Mary (Thomas) Powell. He was a graduate of Mansfield University and the University of Colorado, and after serving in the U.S. Army became a professional science educator for his entire career. Mr. Powell retired from Lock Haven University in 1986 as an Associate Professor Emeritus of Geosciences and Astronomy.
Mr. Powell was an avid and skilled outdoorsman and in his retirement enjoyed participating in wing and clay shooting sports and fly fishing on Pine Creek.

Mr. Powell is survived by two daughters, Lee Ann Eichenlaub of Lock Haven and Sara Ambrose of Norfolk, Va.; a son, Judson Powell of Syracuse, N.Y.; and five grandchildren, Steven Eichenlaub of Cleveland, Ohio, Nathan Eichenlaub of Denver, Colo., Dana Eichenlaub of Lock Haven, and Carly and Sofia Powell of Syracuse, N.Y.
Mr. Powell was predeceased by a brother, T. Philip Powell of Taylor, Pa.
A memorial service and interment will be held at the convenience of the family at the Fairlawn Cemetery, Dalton, Pa. Arrangements are under the direction of the Jacob Davis Funeral Home, Taylor, Pa.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in Mr. Powell's name be made to the Alzheimer's Association (alz.org).
