Couple observe 40th anniversary

Mr. and Mrs. James Fairchild, of Wayne and Morris, are observing their 40th wedding anniversary today, Sept. 2, 2012.

They were married by the Rev. R. Bruce Smay at First United Methodist Church, Muncy.

Mrs. Fairchild, the former Sally Ann Bower, is a native of Muncy. She is the daughter of the late Martha Jane and R.L. Bower. She graduated from Muncy High School in 1965 and from Lycoming College in 1969, and received a degree in special education for the mentally and physically handicapped from Penn State in 1981. She retired in 2007 after 30 years of service from Radnor Township School District, Wayne, and was employed by Montoursville Area School District as a teacher. She is employed by Delaware County Intermediate Unit, Glenn Mills, as a diagnostic special educator.

Mr. Fairchild, a native of Williamsport, is the son of Phyllis Welsh, Lock Haven, and the late Elmer E. Fairchild Jr. He graduated from Muncy High School in 1966 and from the former East Stroudsburg State College, now a university, in 1970. He received a master's degree in education from West Chester University in 1977. He retired this year after 35 years of service from Delaware County Intermediate Unit, Morton, as a reading specialist.

They are the parents of two sons, Abram James (A.J.), Berwyn, and Zachary, Gwynedd Valley.

They are expecting their first grandchild in October.

In honor of their anniversary, a trip to New York Yankees spring training in Tampa, Fla., is being planned for spring 2013.
