Mary Ellen Gulliver Aho, 92, a resident of Valley View Nursing Center in Loyalsock Township after residing on Shiffler Avenue in Loyalsock Township, died on Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2012. Mrs. Aho was born March 21, 1920, in Williamsport, Pa., the daughter of C. Ray Gulliver and Ellen I. Bell.
Mary Ellen graduated from the Williamsport Area High School in 1937, where she was active in theater arts. She graduated from Dickenson Junior College, now Lycoming College, with a secretarial degree. She worked for the Williamsport National Bank and the Ralph Arnold Insurance Agency.
In 1950, Mary Ellen married Toivo O. Aho, Superintendent of Tests for the former Bethlehem Steel Wire Rope plant in Williamsport. She enjoyed many trips with her husband to Florida, Delaware and New York City. Mary Ellen and Toi celebrated their 56th anniversary in 2006 prior to Toi's death in March of 2007.
Mary Ellen was a long time member of Covenant-Central Presbyterian Church, the Williamsport Woman's Club and the Clio Club. She enjoyed ceramics, knitting, reading and homemaking. She also was a volunteer at Sycamore Manor Nursing Home.
Mary Ellen is survived by two daughters, Nancy Renninger (Kurt) of Loyalsock Township, and Linda Knott (Jerry) of Altoona, Pa.; two grandchildren, Kelle B. Robinson (Dale Jr.) of Linden, Pa., and Kyle E. Renninger (Ali) of Raleigh, N.C., three stepgrandchildren, Brad Knot, Fort Hood, Texas, Jeremy Knott (Danielle) of Claysburg, Pa., and Daniel Knott, Fort Stewart, Ga.; and two great-granddaughters, Ashlyn and Brynn Robinson.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be sent to the James V. Brown Library, 19 E. Fourth St., Williamsport, PA 17701, in memory of Mary Ellen.
A graveside service in Wildwood Cemetery, assisted by Spitler Funeral Home in Montoursville, will be held at the family's convenience.
