Should the Post Office make a profit?
No! The United States Postal Service, like all other government services, was created by Congress without having to make a profit. Why is the post office having such financial problems at this time?
In a lame-duck session of Congress in late 2006, legislation was passed and signed by the president that requires the postal service to fund 75 years of healthcare costs for retired postal employees over a ten-year period.
Should the U.S. Postal Service be privatized? No! Have you ever compared the cost of sending a small package, such as a book, with a private service and the government service? If not, you will find that the U.S. Postal Service delivers anywhere, including isolated rural areas, in the USA and does it for less.
The U.S. Postal Service is under attack by some politicians who would like to privatize a government agency that serves all Americans very well without making a profit. Why? For the same reason that Wall Street and the insurance industry would like to see Social Security and Medicare privatized; they want your money for their profits.
