The big flood would have been significantly worse except that Lake Makoma had been drained for a new dam, which was virtually completed. The storm completely filled the huge lake.
Jerry Walls said that the railroad bridge would take a year to replace. I sent a letter to the editor supported by photographic evidence and an article on the exact similar bridge which the Lackawanna Railroad replaced in 29 days using its own money. A year is now up and Mr. Wall's replacement said in your newspaper it will be another year.
Another example is PennDOT's projected repair of Route 220 bridge at Hughesville of 5 to 6 weeks. The gas company did it in one week. These are fine examples of private enterprise versus government, 29 days versus two years, one week versus 5 or 6.
