A disaster

September 18, 2012
Williamsport Sun-Gazette

I live on West 3rd St between Arch and Poplar. This area has been a disaster for the past 2 months. I guess they are replacing water lines or whatever, which is fine, but here is my problem. The contractors doing this project don't work Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, so at the beginning of the project the road was closed Mon-Thurs, 7am to 5pm. The last hour of each day was spent filling in holes with dirt and stones, watering the dirt so the dust was at a minimum until it dried, which took about 1 hour.

The next morning they would spend the first hour getting everything opened back up. I'm no rocket scientist, but if the road can be closed all day long when the majority of the traffic occurs, why not leave it closed overnight and save 2 hours of work each day. This would also solve the other problems I have with this project.

Every time a vehicle drives by a dust cloud fills the air. I'm not talking about a little dust either. I'm talking dust from the ground to the tops of the houses with every vehicle. The dust then settles on our cars, houses, etc. I'm not one to get sick often either but this summer I am constantly battling illness. I have had a cough for 2 months that won't go away. This is ridiculous.

They filled holes with asphalt near Arch Street where businesses are. I guess the residents aren't as important as commercial properties. Signs say this fiasco won't be finished until Oct. 31. Either close the street or get it done.
