Did you know September is World Alzheimer's Month? The facts are alarming. A person is diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease every 68 seconds. It is the sixth leading cause of death in this country, and yes you can die from this disease. My husband died at the age of 58. People in their 30's, 40's and 50's do develop this disease. By the time people reach their 80's , there is a 50-50 chance that they will have Alzheimer's.
The burdens faced by caregivers are immense, take it from me. I am a long distance caregiver for my uncle, and was a 24/7 caregiver for my beloved husband. It is an all-consuming job. In fact, some call a surviving caregiver one of the "living dead". Many caregivers predecease their loved ones due to the profound stress imposed on them.
The "silver tsunami" is fast approaching. As our population ages, more and more people will be diagnosed. There is no definitive cause for Alzheimer's, there is no cure, and there are absolutely no survivors. The financial pressures that will be placed on our medical system will unsustainable under our current models.
The Greater Pennsylvania Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association is holding a Walk To End Alzheimer's Saturday at 10 am at Indian Park in Montoursville. Please consider coming to gather information and to walk. We all can make a difference in this seemingly insurmountable fight against this horrendous disease.
