The second and final day of 16th Susquehanna 500 Mini-Indy racing action wrapped up Sunday in Brandon Park just before brief rain showers hit the area.
Racers strapped themselves into go-karts and negotiated the twists and turns of the park all while helping to raise money for the Northcentral Pennsylvania Red Cross, which covers Lycoming, Clinton and Tioga counties.
The event serves as the organization's main fundraiser.
"We had absolutely no rain" during the race, said Joseph Hutchinson, Mini-Indy co-chairman. "The checkered flag fell, and we started to get rain. We got very lucky."
Hutchinson said in excess of $17,000 was raised by the race. The Red Cross held a make-up Mini-Indy race in April because last September's flooding canceled the 2011 race.
He said the race would not take place without the help of numerous community volunteers who pull the event together.
"There were a lot of thrills in today's race. A lot of good racing," he said. "Most of the winners are teams that have a lot of experience on the track."
Plans already are under way for the 2013 race, according to Hutchinson.
"We haven't set the date yet, but it will be about the same date in September next year, without a doubt," he said.
