Women's soccer has record-setting week for Penn College

September 23, 2012
Williamsport Sun-Gazette

The Pennsylvania College of Technology women's soccer team had a record-setting performance and four of the college's fall teams posted a combined 5-0-1 record last week.

FLASHBACK

Women's soccer

In five previous matches since 2005 against NCAA Division III Lycoming College, Penn College was scoreless and had given up 27 goals. Although it failed to score again this year, a 0-0 tie Thursday with the Warriors was, in many ways, as good as a win.

"We played an amazing game. It was probably the best I've ever seen the team perform since I've been at Penn College," said Markus Rybak, who is in his third season as head coach. "We had clear chances to score and just didn't. Overall, I thought we were even, if not a little better than they were. ... It's a good accomplishment for us."

Although the match goes into the record books as a tie, a penalty-kick shootout gave the Wildcats their first Battle for the Lumber trophy, awarded annually since 2010 to the winner between the two city colleges.

On Saturday at PSU Beaver, Jocelyn Moyer scored a career-high four goals and Kaileen Delaney added three as Penn College dominated in every phase of the game, outshooting Beaver, 55-1, and winning, 17-0. The 17 goals are a school record and the team improved to 5-1-1. Scoring two goals each for the Wildcats were Valeria Passalacqua, Elizabeth Greis and Madilyn Walters.

Men's soccer

Three goals in the second half lifted the Wildcats to a 3-2 non-conference win at Mt. Aloysius College Thursday. Jose Gomez-Zavala scored what proved to be the game-winner in the 74 th minute.

Returning to Penn State University Athletic Conference action on Saturday, Penn College outshot PSU Beaver, 15-2, in a 6-0 win. Christopher Brennan and Luke McFalls each scored two goals and Tarik LaRoche had two assists as the Wildcats improved to 6-1-1 overall and 4-0 in the conference.

Team tennis

Nathan Scott, Adam Smith, Jordan Rodgers and Christopher Morrin all were double winners (in singles and doubles) on Saturday in a 7-2 Penn College victory over PSU Lehigh Valley that improved the team's record to 2-1.

Women's volleyball

Tara Powell had nine kills in Penn College's 3-0 PSUAC win at PSU Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday. Morgan Moberg had 13 assists. The Wildcats are 5-3 overall and 3-0 in the PSUAC.

Cross country

Competing against NCAA Division II and III schools, the Penn College men finished 11th in a 12-team field at the Lock Haven University River Run Invitational on Saturday. Wildcat Dan Starr placed 103rd in a personal-best 29 minutes, 55 seconds, over the 8K course. Carnegie Mellon University finished first and Lock Haven was second.

Odds and ends

Women's volleyball player Powell, a senior outside hitter, was named PSUAC women's volleyball Player of the Week for the period ending Sept. 16. In four games Powell had 35 kills and 37 digs as the Wildcats went 3-1.

In the Week 3 United States Collegiate Athletic Association Coaches' polls, the Penn College women's soccer team is No. 3, the men's soccer team is No. 8 and the women's volleyball team is No. 15.
