There was a large article regarding the purchase of a Wolf Township Tax List, 1862, and its sale on eBay, appearing on Page 1 of the Sun-Gazette Sept. 15. I appreciate the concern that Ms. Livecchia had for the disposition of this record.
The tax list was brought to my attention by another concerned individual, quite possibly a descendant of an early Lycoming County family.
I am pleased to tell you that I was, acting on behalf of the Lycoming County Historical Society, the successful bidder of this item. The tax list will remain permanently within the collections of the Society in a temperature and humidity-controlled environment within an acid-free enclosure. It soon will be available for researchers.
I certainly agree with Ms. Livecchia that cultural property that relates so significantly to the history of the County remain within the County. I am encouraging other interested individuals, with records of genealogical or historical interest, to safeguard against the loss of these records by donating them to an appropriate archival facility.
