Donald E. Shelley, D.D.S.

Donald Eugene Shelley, 89, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2012, after a short illness.

"Doc" Shelley was born April 12, 1923, in Shillington, Pa., and was the son of the late Paul and Laura Shelley.

"Doc" served his country as a Boatswain's Mate in the U.S. Navy 6th Special Naval Construction Battalion from 1943-1946 on Guadalcanal, Bougainville and Ulithi Atoll.

"Doc" Shelley was a graduate of Albright College and the University of Pennsylvania Dental School in orthodontics. He practiced orthodontics for over 30 years with offices in Williamsport, Lock Haven, Lewisburg and Jersey Shore. He was active at both Williamsport and Divine Providence hospitals caring for cleft palate patients.

He was a fellow of the American College of Dentists and International College of Dentists, member of the American Association of Orthodontics, a life member of the Pennsylvania Dental Association and past president of the Lycoming County Dental Society.

He was a 50-plus year member of the Masons, achieving the 32nd degree. He also was a 50-plus year member of the Shrine, the Scottish Rite, the National Sojourners, Kiwanis and the American Legion.

Along with his dedication to his family and patients, "Doc" loved to hunt and fish, and was a lifetime member of Grays Run Hunting Club. He enjoyed being a gentleman farmer, in addition to serving the local 4-H clubs in many capacities.

In his later years, he attended Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Jersey Shore, Pa.

He is survived by his wife, Jean, with whom he shared 66 years of marriage; son, Stephen and Jacqueline Shelley of Huntsville, Ala.; daughter, Donna and Robert Biehl of Williamsport; and three grandchildren, R. Jonathan, Jessica and Jillian.

He was predeceased by his sisters Alice, Evelyn and Geraldine.

Interment will be a private ceremony, while the memorial services will be open to friends and family. The day and time of the memorial service will be announced in October by the James C. Maneval Funeral Home, Ltd., "A Life Celebration Home," Williamsport, Pa.

In lieu of flowers, his family requests gifts be sent to the Shriners Hospital for Children, Cleft Lip and Palate Donation, 516 Carew St., Springfield, MA 01104 or to the Lycoming County 4-H Scholarship Fund, 542 County Farm Road, Suite 206, Montoursville, PA 17754.
