David P. Montis, 54, of 50 Grampian Boulevard, was sentenced to seven years probation and to pay back more than $117,000 in restitution for taking money that didn't belong to him.
Montis, who was appointed as power of attorney for his 93-year-old uncle-in-law who resided in a local nursing home, used the elderly man's savings last September to buy a home for himself, wife and three children at the Grampian Boulevard address, according to police.
Montis was charged with failure to make required disposition and sentenced Thursday in Lycoming County Court by Judge Nancy L. Butts.
Investigators said Montis took $45,000 from the victim's safe deposit box; cashed $24,000 of his savings bonds; cashed a $10,000 certificate of deposit and wrote $9,245 in personal checks.
Montis also took a diamond ring and $2,500 that the victim kept in his house as a "rainy day" fund.
