Area campground, ATV trails close

October 7, 2012
Williamsport Sun-Gazette

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Tioga-Hammond and Cowanesque lakes have announced that Tompkins Campground, in Tioga, has closed for the season. It will reopen May 15, 2013.

The Ives Run Campground on Hammond Lake began reservation-only camping on Oct. 1. It will close on Oct. 31 and the attendant office will not be open after that date. However, camp hosts will be available in the campground.

In addition, the Hawthorn bathhouse and Pine comfort station will be the only restroom facilities available. Boat mooring will be available on a first-come, first-served basis for registered campers.

Only a limited number of comfort facilties now are available at the Ives Run, South Shore and Lamb Creeks day-use areas.

In addition, the ATV trails in Sproul State Forest, Renovo, are closed. They include Whiskey Springs Trail near Westport in Clinton County and Bloody Skillet Trail near DeHaas Road off of Route 144.

The Bloody Skillet Connector Trail closed on Sept. 4 due to trail construction and re-routing of the lower section. Its re-opening for the winter riding season will be determined by the progress of the project.

The other ATV trails will re-open on Jan. 13 for the winter riding season, which ends on April 1.

ATV use is not allowed in Sproul State Forest or on any forestry roads during hunting seasons - except for disabled hunters who are in special-use area designated by the district forester.
