Revamped weekly Showcase debuts this Thursday

October 8, 2012
Williamsport Sun-Gazette

Starting Thursday, the Sun-Gazette will feature a supersized, 16-page Showcase section.

The section will highlight the nightlife and fine arts happenings in Williamsport and the surrounding region.

In keeping with its "more news, more value" principles, the Sun-Gazette is hoping the new Showcase will focus more on local people and places, whether it be in the arts community or an evening performance.

"I want to make sure the music and fine arts communities are equally represented and this will accomplish that," Sun-Gazette Entertainment Editor Matthew Parrish said. "I've worked with our graphic artist, Tim Wertz, to make the section more visually appealing."

"The Thursday paper has long been a day where people go to find upcoming events for weekend planning, whether it be the arts or nightlife," Sun-Gazette Publisher Bernard A. Oravec said. "Now it will all be there within one section."

With this change, some reader favorites such as the listing of best-selling books will move to the Sunday Lifestyle section, where local authors already are highlighted.

Popular items such as Jack Felix's theatre reviews and Joseph W. Smith III's movie reviews will be in the Thursday Showcase section along with upcoming events at the Community Arts Center, the Community Theatre League and local galleries.

"We will also continue our support of local bands with more opportunities for interviews and profiles," Oravec said,.

As always, people may submit news tips, calendar items and events to or via the Virtual Newsroom at, Parrish said. The deadline for all submissions is 10 a.m. Friday for publication the following Thursday.

"We think the overall content will be greater than that provided by any other information organization in the region," Oravec said.
