David Paul Schappell

David Paul Schappell, 76, of Dogwood Lane, Williamsport, went to be with the Lord Friday, Oct. 5, 2012, at Rose View Center.

Born March 24, 1936, in Reading, he was a son of Ludwig and Kathryn May Schappell. He married Sandra A. Brown and would have celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary on Oct. 21.

David served in the U.S. Marine Corp. during the Korean War. David was a graduate of Cressona High School and received his bachelor's in psychology and masters in rehabilitation education from Penn State University.

He had worked as a psychiatric counselor in Indiana, Pa., while there he helped establish Eastern Orthodox Foundation to help reintroduce people into society. After leaving Indiana, he worked for WACC and County Prison as a counselor. David helped start Transitional Living Center in Montoursville to get juveniles back into mainstream society. He then retired as a truck driver with the mail service. David and his wife were foster parents for over 75 children with various organizations.

He was a former volunteer with Old Lycoming Volunteer Fire Company and was a member of Pine Street Methodist Church where he sang in the choir. He enjoyed wood working, gardening, being outdoors and spending time with his grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, are five children Lyle R. Schappell (Denise) of Ephrata, Jody Lewandowski (Scott) of Indiana, Pa., Ludwig Schappell of Cogan Station, Jillian Brooks (Todd) of Cogan Station and Quay Schappell (Shelly) of Williamsport; 13 grandchildren, Sierra, Lance, Megan, Luke, Levi, Kyle, Jake, Jackqulyn, Taylor, Jessica, Lenae, Nina and Marina; brother, Charles Schappell of Tenn.; and a sister, Karen Gibson of Pine Grove.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Pine St. United Methodist Church, 441 Pine St., Williamsport. Visitation will be held 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at church.

Burial will be held 12 p.m. Wednesday at Laureldale Cemetery, Reading.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions should be made to the Pine Street United Methodist Church, 441 Pine St., Williamsport, PA 17701 or Lycoming County S.P.C.A., 2805 Reach Road, Williamsport, PA 17701.
