Roundup: Lancers advance in D4 team tennis

The Loyalsock girls tennis team advanced to next week's District 4 Class AA semifinals with a 3-0 win over Bloomsburg on Tuesday afternoon at Bloomsburg University. The Lancers (16-0) received singles wins from Pam and Emily Niditch and Kim Levy. Loyalsock's two doubles teams led their matches, but they were halted after the Lancers secured their third team points that ensured victory.

Montgomery defeated Milton, 3-0. After winning the first three matches, the final two were suspended. In its second match of the day, Montgomery fell to Bucktail, 3-2. With the match tied at 2 apiece, Meredith Blessard defeated Ashley Lovell in three sets to give Bucktail the win in the final match.

Wellsboro defeated Williamson, 7-0, in a regular-season match. The Green Hornets won all seven matches in straight sets.

In girls cross country, Williamsport won all four matchups, finishing the season 16-2. The Millionaires had six runners in the top 10, including Sarah Wirth, who finished second overall.

Towanda was the lone team with a full squad and picked up 15-50 wins over Canton, Troy and Cowanesque Valley.

Lewisburg finished the regular season 16-3 after defeating Shamokin (15-49), Southern Columbia (15-48) and Midd-West (15-50). Lewisburg's Allison Graham placed fourth overall and Hughesville's Hannah Merrifield was second.

In boys cross country, Williamsport won all four matchups, finishing the season 15-3. Herb Stelly lead the Millionaires, finishing first overall with a time of 18:32.

Canton defeated Towanda (27-28) and Troy (21-36). Emmit Watson was Canton's top finisher, placing third at 16:33.

The Lewisburg boys finished the regular season 19-0 and won the PHAC-II championship after sweeping Shamokin (15-50), Southern Columbia (22-36), Danville (26-29) and Midd-West (15-49).

In boys soccer, Cody Schmouder scored off a Nathaniel Wilston assist less than three minutes into overtime and lifted Liberty to a 2-1 win over Wellsboro. Wilston tied the game in regulation, scoring in the 56th minute. Liberty improved to 9-5.

Loyalsock moved a step closer to a district playoff berth with a 4-0 win over Central Columbia. Tyler Quigley scored a goal and added two assists for the Lancers (8-6-1), who travel to Warrior Run on Thursday.

St. John Neumann's Anthony Pasnello scored in the 69th minute to avoid a shutout in a 7-1 loss to Benton.

Sullivan County conceded a goal late in the first half and fell to Southern Columbia, 1-0.

Milton scored in each half and defeated Williamsport, 2-1. Gennaro Girardi scored for the Millionaires on a penalty kick.

In men's soccer, Lycoming senior Charlie Vess became just the 22nd player in school history to reach 15 career goals, but the Warriors fell to Lebanon Valley, 4-1.

Lock Haven was shut out by Millersville, 2-0. Millersville scored twice in a six-minute span late in the second half.

In women's soccer, Lock Haven played to its fourth consecutive draw, tying Millersville 0-0. Dana Wozniak had seven saves for the Lady Eagles.

IUP's Brittney Kuhns scored twice and the Hawks defeated Mansfield, 2-0.

In college field hockey, Mansfield's Jamie Twist made eight second-half saves and the Mountaineers won their first PSAC West game, 3-1 over Seton Hill. Seton Hill scored first, but Alycia Pici gave Mansfield the lead 21:47 into the game.

In college volleyball, Lycoming freshman Bethany Richardson had 20 kills but Widener defeated the Warriors in fives sets, 3-2 (8-25, 25-23, 20-25, 25-20, 14-16).
