Muncy girls beat Montgomery

MUNCY - Even though the day was more about raising money for a good cause, that didn't stop Muncy from taking advantage of an early goal en route to a 9-0 win over Montgomery.

Muncy, which raised money and accepted donations in the days leading up to the game for the Ronald McDonald House, capitalized off the momentum created from an Alyssa Hitesman goal in the opening 10 minutes.

Hitesman booted a ball just after she crossed midfield and caught Montgomery's keeper out of position for the game's first goal. Hitesman added a second goal and an assist in the second half.

"You always have to be ready to get the ball and move," Hitesman said. "You have to be ready to take those shots. And if you don't see the opening, look somewhere else."

Hitesman didn't have to look any further on her shot, which she lofted over the keeper's head.

"This team seems to thrive on goals in bunches," Muncy coach Jim DeVore said. "When we can get that first one. it usually follows up with a couple more."

The early goal sent the floodgates flying open as Abby DeVore tallied moments later on a penalty kick and Carley DeVore added another for a 3-0 Muncy (7-6-2) lead.

Abby DeVore put her PK chance to the post, beating the keeper as she lunged for the low rolling shot. She then posted another goal in the half and one more in the second half to complete her hat trick.

"It was deflating and the PK took the wind out of our sails," Montgomery coach Samantha Mix said of the early goals. "It just kind of went down hill from there."

Not counting Carley DeVore's goal, which happened less than two minutes after sister Abby scored her first on the PK, Muncy continued to pressure Montgomery (2-11) with Nikki Jones scoring and Abby DeVore adding her second in the final minute of the first half.

"When we score, we score a lot. And when we don't score, we don't score a lot," Jim DeVore said. "We have a great group."

Abby DeVore bridged her first-half performance with the first goal of the second half. Hitesman and Jones added another each and Taylor Kuntz scored her first varsity goal to round out the scoring.

"We've got four or five kids that aren't afraid to take shots from distance," coach DeVore said. "When they put it all together and drive the ball they can score."
