The Digiplex Cinema Center, 300 W. Fourth St., and Great Escape Theater, 965 Lycoming Mall Circle, Pennsdale, are known for showing the newest movies, whether they be comedies, action, horror or some other genre, but the theaters now are offering the area the opportunity to see one-time special showings.
The theaters are showing classic films and live events, such as concerts and operas.
Content is being provided by Fathom Events, Diginext, Emerging Pictures and Screen Vision.
"What we're trying to do is show everything," said Les Barnhart, managing director of the Digiplex.
"Fathom decided to bring all of their specials ... for the enjoyment of our customers," said Craig Worth, general manager of the Great Escape.
Along with showing Operas and UFC fights, Barnhart said the theater will show films that aren't as well-known, such as "Chloe and Keith's Wedding," and "The Levi Effect."
The chance to bring these shows to the area was made possible because the theaters have switched to a digital format.
"It's either streamed or it's sent to us via a hard drive," Worth said.
Barnhart explained that the theater no longer operates by film. And the new format allows it to show live events.
The theaters will show "L'Elisir d'Amore" live from the Metropolitan Opera at 12:55 p.m. on Saturday.
Barnhart added that when he found out about the "alternative" programming, he was a bit "overwhelmed," because the theater had tried it about a year ago without success. But he said although the crowds have started out small, the shows are gaining more popularity.
He said there's something for everybody. Most people will not want to see all of the shows but those with different interests will enjoy the selections.
Worth added that operas have been popular at his theater.
"Opera brings out a great crowd every time we show them," he said.
"Their goal is to have ... these kind of (programs) in all these theaters, along with all the movies coming out," Barnhart said.
Worth, who said he's a "huge fan" of classic films, said it is a great opportunity for the community. He said the area will receive "a little more culture," through the events.
"I think it's just good for the community above everything," Worth said.
Barnhart added that it allows those who don't want to travel the opportunity to stay in Williamsport.
"Instead of having to leave Williamsport to entertain or do something with your evening, you can stay here," he said. "It helps bring a fun thing to Williamsport."
