Local roundup: Williamsport doubles team reaches district semis

Williamsport's Maggie Manchester and Amanda Hampton advanced to the semifinals of the District 2-4 Class AAA doubles championships after a pair of wins on Thursday at Kirby Park in Wilkes-Barre. Manchester and Hampton, seeded No. 2, defeated a team from Delaware Valley in the second round in straight sets and a team from Wyoming Valley West in straight sets in the quarterfinals.

Williamsport's Livia Nash and Olivia Kuzio dropped a tough three-set match to a team from Scranton in the opening round. Nash and Kuzio dropped the first set in a tie-breaker, won the second set before losing 6-1 in the third.

Manchester and Hampton will return to Kirby Park on Monday to face an Abington Heights team in the semifinals.

In girls soccer, undefeated Warrior Run stared down a one-goal deficit and responded with two unanswered goals to get past Danville with a 2-1, overtime win. Sarah Haluck assisted on both goals and Jordyn Johnson punched in the decisive goal with 16 seconds left in overtime.

Meadowbrook Christian received four goals from Madison Burrows en route to a 7-0 win over St. John Neumann.

Three minutes into overtime Jen Jackson dribbled into the penalty box and crossed the ball to Miranda Young who scored to give South Williamsport a 4-3, overtime win over Shikellamy.

In boys soccer, Ben Hillman scored in the 36th minute and Dylan Confair added an insurance goal in the 48th minute as Williamsport beat Shikellamy, 2-0, in boys soccer. Hillman was assisted by Dylan Bennett and Confair was assisted by Matt Marrie. Tanner Kreisher made eight saves for the shutout.

Muncy's Ammar Sabonovic scored six goals, including the 50th of his career, as the Indians beat Montgomery, 11-0. Sabonovic also added two assists, and Dawson Fox had four assists for the Indians.

South Williamsport's Dakota Rosenberg scored in the 67th minute, the lone goal in a 1-0 win over Millville. Rhian Kozen made five saves for the Mounties to preserve the shutout.

Sullivan County dropped a key league match against Bloomsburg, 4-0. The Griffins were outshot 17-4 and Jonathan Nixon scored three goals for the Panthers.

In boys cross country, Jersey Shore's Cameron Hart and Cody Allen tied for first place in their cross country meet in 19:05, but Central Mountain beat the Bulldogs, 25-33. Brady Reese finished third for Central Mountain.

In girls cross country, Central Mountain took the top three spots in a 15-50 win over Jersey Shore. Laurel Moyer finished first in 23:13 for the Wildcats.

In volleyball, Wellsboro's Hannah Zuchowski reached 800 career kills and the Green Hornets swept Athens, 3-0 (25-8, 25-8, 25-18).

In college field hockey, Mansfield surrendered a 3-0 lead to Houghton and lost in a stroke-off, 4-3.

In men's soccer, Penn College junior Chris Brennan scored a season-high four goals and added an assist as the Wildcats defeated PSU New Kensington, 6-1.

In women's volleyball, Penn College sophomore Courtney Gernert had 14 kills and 10 digs to lead the Wildcats to a 3-0 (25-12, 25-11, 26-24) sweep of Penn State Harrisburg.

Lycoming dropped the first two sets, but rebounded for a 3-2 (18-25, 21-25, 25-18, 25-13, 15-11) win over Lancaster Bible. Freshman Bethany Richardson led the Warriors with 14 kills.
