Allegheny Grange honors couple

October 14, 2012
Williamsport Sun-Gazette

The Allegheny Grange recently honored John H. and Vivian I. Hall, Benton, as Grangers of the Year.

The Halls were selected because they "represent Grange through and through." According to Helen M. Mayer, publicity and information chairwoman, the couple have been active and devoted members of Allegheny Grange for many years.

"As such, you can always count on them to be present at work days, fundraisers and all Grange events," she said. "One fine example occurred this past spring when the two of them came to the Grange Hall for a day. John powerwashed the exterior of the building while Vivian cleaned the inside."

Mayer said another recent day had them working side-by-side with other members for an entire day, husking, preparing and freezing corn the Grange will use to serve at dinners for the next year.

The Halls have served in nearly all offices at both the subordinate and the Pomona level. They also have served in some capacities in the state level, including John as state deputy.

Mayer said the couple come from parents who were very involved in Grange, devoting many years of service to Allegheny Grange.

"They make arrangements for the food for all our events such as sandwich sales and the dinners we serve for other organizations. They are most always the first to arrive, getting the coffee on and the last to leave at any meeting, making sure the Grange is left in proper order," Mayer added.
