Joseph G. Berta, 90, of 1175 Carey Hill Road, Montoursville, passed away Thursday, Oct. 11, 2012, at the Gatehouse in Divine Providence Hospital. He was born Oct. 10, 1922, in Windber, Pa., a son of Matthew and Mary Smola Berta.
Joe retired from Textron, formerly Avco, after nearly 40 years of service. He was a graduate of Windber High School and attended the former Williamsport Technical Institute. He enjoyed crossword puzzles and cryptograms.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, the former Doris G. Mahaffey; a son, Matthew J. Berta of Williamsport; two daughters, Susan E. Berta of Allenwood, and Barbara J. (Brian) Angstadt of Hamburg, Pa.; two sisters, Sue Novak of Windber and Cecelia Kinkela of Sumner, Wash.; three grandchildren, Luke, Carrie, and Rebecca, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother, Michael Berta, and two sisters, Ann Ober and Betty Bratter.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 15, 2012, at the Spitler Funeral Home, 733 Broad St., Montoursville, with the Rev. David W. Trostle officiating. Interment will follow in the Montoursville Cemetery. Friends will be received on Sunday, Oct. 14, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
