Police nab NJ fugitive after traffic stop

October 13, 2012
Williamsport Sun-Gazette

A driver's failure to use a turn signal resulted in city police nabbing a fugitive wanted in New Jersey, according to court records.

Once in custody and placed in the back of a police cruiser about 1:50 a.m. Sept. 27, Eugene S. Williams, 39, of 830 Park Place, attempted to use a hidden handcuff key to unlatch the handcuffs officers had put on him, police said.

Williams vehicle was stopped after he failed to use a turn signal in the 400 block of Campbell Street, police said. It turned out that Williams, on probation for aggravated assault, was wanted in Camden County for probation violation.

No information was provided on how Williams had obtained a handcuff key. Following his arraignment before District Judge Jon E. Kemp on charges of being a fugitive from justice, attempted escape, providing false identification to law enforcement and driving with a suspended license, he was committed to the Lycoming County Prison in lieu of $250,000 bail.
