Local roundup: Hughesville girls fall in OT

Brittany Snyder scored early in the second half, but Southern Columbia scored the final two goals, including Mackenzie Clark's winner 2 minutes into overtime in the Tigers' 2-1 win over Hughesville on Saturday in girls soccer. Allison Russell made 10 saves for the Spartans.

Four players scored a goal for Abington Heights as the Comets beat Williamsport, 4-0. Riley Gossner made eight saves for the Millionaires.

In boys soccer, Evan Lewis scored two goals as Sullivan County stayed in the District 4 playoff hunt and blanked Montgomery, 6-0.

Williamson and Liberty each scored a first-half goal in a 1-1 tie. Peter Kutbay scored on a Cody Schmouder assist in the 21st minute, and Williamson's Logan Everett scored on a Tyrus Hamblin assist in the 28th minute to tie the game.

Ryan Foran scored in the 60th minute to give South Williamsport a 1-0 win over Muncy.

Millville's Richard Wood scored the first three goals in the Quakers' 5-0 win over St. John Neumann.

In women's soccer, Stevenson shut out Lycoming, 4-0 with a three-goal outburst in a three-minute span.

Penn College defeated Valley Forge Christian College, 6-0. Warrior Run graduate Reda Vermilya shared the shutout in goal with Kirsten Foti. South Williamsport graduate Kierstin Steer had a goal and assist.

Mansfield's Karyn Anselmo scored in the 40th minute and the Mountaineers tied Clarion, 1-1.

Jamie Hunter scored two goals and tallied an assist to lead Lock Haven to a 3-2 upset win over No. 2 West Chester University.

In men's soccer, Lock Haven allowed two first-half goals and fell to West Chester, 2-0.

A second-half penalty kick goal helped lift Stevenson University to a critical 1-0 win over Lycoming College.

A foul inside the box set Christopher Panian up for the penalty kick, which he put inside the left corner of the net to lift Stevenson over Lycoming.

In college tennis, Lycoming senior Jason Mifsud, a Montoursville graduate, advanced to the semifinals in the top flight at the MAC individual championships. Mifsud will play today against No. 4 Eric Fritzges of Elizabethtown.

Penn College closed the regular season with an 8-1 win over Penn State Lehigh Valley. The win ensured the Wildcats the No. 2 seed for next week's conference championships.

In volleyball, Lock Haven beat Shippensburg, 3-1 (25-23, 25-21, 24-26, 25-17). Lock Haven senior Gao Xuan had 21 kills, 11 digs and three blocks.

Backed by solid hitting efforts from senior Jackie Oliva and junior Shelby Gear, Lycoming downed Hood College, 3-0 (25-10, 25-16, 25-16), in the opener of a Commonwealth Conference tri-match before falling to Stevenson University, 3-0 (25-16, 25-9, 25-14).

Penn College senior Tara Powell totaled 22 kills as the Wildcats won both its matches at the Penn State Beaver quad match. The Wildcats swept both the host (25-21, 25-13, 25-14) and Penn State Greater Allegheny (25-12, 25-12, 25-14).

In college cross country, the No. 13 Lock Haven men's team had nine runners finish among the Top 17 finishers as the Bald Eagles took home the team title at the Gettysburg College Invitational.

Tyler Hileman led the Bald Eagles and finished in 26 minutes, 2 seconds and 10th place.

Jessica McDonald led the Lock Haven. She finished 20th out of 394 runners with a time of 23:23.

In its final tune-up before the Middle Atlantic Conference Champion-ships, the Lycoming College cross country teams continued to show marked improvement, with 11 runners posting season-best times at the DeSales University Invitational. The women's team posted finished 14th in a 20-team field and the men's squad took 19th in a 22-team field.

Senior Ashley Buck led the women's squad, finishing 41st with a time of 26:47.59.

Freshman Peter Rittenhouse dropped under 30 minutes for the first time in his career, posting a 29:52.15 to finish 84th in a field of 225 runners to help lead the Lycoming men's team to a 19th place finish.

Penn College took first place in a league meet at PSU DuBois with a score of 52 points. They finished just ahead of PSU Greater Allegheny which had 58 points. The Wildcars' Dan Starr finished third overall in 30:26.

In field hockey, junior Taryn Schawillie scored her 42nd career goal to tie the score in the 19th minute but top-ranked Shippensburg answered with four first-half goals to beat Mansfield 7-2 in a PSAC West game.

In swimming, Mansfield finished third at the Millersville Relay Carnival.

East Stroudsburg took first with 548 team points while host Millersville was second with 408 points. The Mountaineers rounded out the top three with 218 points.

Mansfield placed third in the 200 freestyle relay and 400 freestyle relay.
