Moment of truth

October 21, 2012
Williamsport Sun-Gazette

Once again we are at the moment of truth in s presidential election. As usual there are many issues to deal with, and who would lead us better; President Barack Obama or former governor Mitt Romney.

Let's begin by exploring the current 7.8 percent unemployment figure. That figure in itself creates much discussion. The positive number would be that 92.2 percent of the population remains employed, or has other income to sustain their lifestyles. In classrooms kids realize that 92.2% is an "A" so are those unemployment numbers that are 8 percent or below that devastating?

Mr. Romney also is on the record of stating he has given up on "47 percent" of Americans, because they want to be victims, and rely on government to aid them in their daily lives. Mr. Romney falls into that 1 percent of wealthy Americans that continue to profit very well at the expense of average Americans and that 47 percent he dismisses.

From 1980-2006 the wealthiest of Americans saw their after tax total income raise on average 10 percent. While during that same time, the bottom 90 percent of working Americans, saw their wages, or after tax income, drop by 20 percent overall.

Let's also explore Mr. Romney's position in America outside his political career. Mr. Romney was the CEO of Bain, which had several divisions within their company; but one of the arms of that organization dealt with leverage takeovers, where they would buy companies, and sell them off for profit; which would lead to company closings; which would lead to layoffs of average citizens in this nation; which contributed to the unemployment numbers of the country. Does that sound like a guy who will work for working families or the middleclass?

It's clear the GOP works for the top 1 percent of the wealthy of this nation, and corporate America; and their own candidate clearly fits that class of 1 percent of that wealth. Just how does a man like Romney understand the middle class? He simply can't.

Regardless of your political party choice, unless you fit that elite 1 percent or are a CEO of a major corporation, or you have offshore accounts, the best choice is the current president; who continues to fight for all Americans and not just the chosen few.
