Intoxicated man jailed for gun violation

October 20, 2012
Williamsport Sun-Gazette

An intoxicated man who fell flat on his face on a city sidewalk was charged with carrying a firearm without a permit after city police discovered a loaded handgun in his back pocket.

Philip Steele, 58, declined treatment for facial injuries suffered when he fell in the 500 block of High Street about 9 p.m. Sunday, police said.

While the gun he was carrying was registered, Steele did not have a permit to carry it, police said.

Steele, of Sunbury, told police he was in the area looking for work and staying in a tent along the (Susquehanna River.

He initially was committed to the Lycoming County Prison as unfit for arraignment and arraigned Monday before District Judge Gary A. Whiteman.

He was then recommitted in lieu of $1,500 bail.
