HUGHESVILLE - Saying Kelsey Harer was at the right place at the right time might not do justice to what Harer actually accomplished with her goal against South Williamsport.
The ninth-seeded Mansfield Tigers overcame a late flurry by No. 8 South Williamsport, which scored two unanswered goals for force overtime. Once in overtime, Mansfield posted just two shots on goal, with the final being Harer's game-winner as the Tigers outlasted South Williamsport for a, 4-3, double overtime win at Raymond H. Perritt Stadium in Hughesville.
"I'm proud of the team and everything they accomplished," South Williamsport coach Elizabeth Deljanovan said. "Everything this team does was evident in this game. They went down and came back stronger, but at the end it just didn't go our way."
Kelsey Harer of Mansfield (32) and Melissa Flook (9)?of South Williamsport try for possession Tuesday at Hughesville.
The Mounties overcame a one-goal lead when Melissa Flook converted an unassisted effort midway through the first half. Flook, after a Megan McConomy goal put Mansfield in front, took advantage of going unmarked on a corner for an easy tap-in goal.
The lead failed to hold though, when Jackie Hillson scored two goals to bridge the first and second half, and give Mansfield a 3-1 advantage.
"This is a valuable experience for the team," Deljanovan said. "We got some big game experience tonight and we have some goals for our future."
South Williamsport, which starts mostly sophomores, showed it wasn't going to shy away from the spotlight of the district playoffs. The young Mounties received goals from Kelcey Coppola, who also notched an assist, and Miranda Young to once again reset the score.
Once in overtime, though, Mansfield took the majority of chances, and eventually cashed in on Harer's effort in the second half of extra time.
