John E. Shirey Sr., 93, of Linden, died Sunday, Oct. 28, 2012, at his home.
Born Aug. 22, 1919, in Williamsport, he was a son of the late Oscar and Elizabeth (Lucas) Shirey. John married Florence Worthley on Dec. 13, 1940.
John graduated as an agriculture teacher from Penn State and served in the Navy during World War II. He then worked as an air traffic controller at the Williamsport Regional Airport, and had an avid love of flying. John was a member of Lycoming Christian Church, the Pennsylvania State Grange and was chairman of the blood drive at Lycoming Christian Church.
Surviving, in addition to his wife Florence, are his children, Susan (Steven) Faivre of Linden, Thomas (Linda) Shirey of Linden, Janet (Terry) Clark of Meadville, and John Jr. (Paulette) Shirey of Linden; 12 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild; and a daughter-in-law, Mary Jane Shirey.
He was preceded in death by a son, James Shirey, and his siblings, Helen, Evelyn, Ralph, Oscar and Elizabeth.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, at Lycoming Christian Church, 20 Chapel Hill Road, Williamsport, with his minister, Donald Dennis, officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lycoming Christian Church Scholarship Fund.
Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Wildwood Cemetery.
