Hospital to benefit from jewelry fundraiser

Evangelical holds health education classes

Evangelical Community Hospital will hold a series of classes through the month of November. Fees may apply. Classes include:

Wednesday - Heartsaver Adult/Child/Infant CPR and AED, 6-10 p.m. at the Community Health Education Center. The course is for people who want to learn how to give CPR to an adult, child, and infant, how to use an AED, and how to assess and phone the emergency response number.

Nov. 12 - Prenatal Breastfeeding, 7-9 p.m. at the Community Health Education Center. Designed for expectant mothers and one support person, the course covers the advantages of breastfeeding and common concerns associated with it.

Nov. 13 - Diabetes Education Day, 8 a.m.-1 p.m. at Boscov's North Court, Selinsgrove. Diabetic vendors will be at the event until 1 p.m. and screenings will be available until 10 a.m.

Attend a free memory screening

WELLSBORO - Are you concerned about memory problems? Get screened. On Nov. 13, The Laurels Personal Care Home in Wellsboro will be offering free memory screenings from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. as part of National Memory Screening Day, a national initiative by the Alzheimer's Foundation of America. Appointments are not necessary; walk-ins welcomed.

"The screenings are free, confidential, fast and most importantly, they serve as a first step toward proper detection and treatment," said registered nurse Deb Wivell, administrator of The Laurels. "Knowledge and proper care can make all the difference." The event also will provide an opportunity to learn more about Alzheimer's disease, aging and community resources.

Class held for Expectant Parents

WELLSBORO - On Nov. 13, Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital will hold a free Expectant Parents class titled "Labor Preparation and Comfort Techniques" from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the board room.

Attendees will learn about relaxation techniques, breathing exercises and position changes. The class is designed to enhance comfort during pregnancy and labor as well as provide suggestions for the mother's support person.

The class is part of a cycle of classes addressing the various concerns of expectant parents, including labor preparation, physical and emotional changes, infant care and feeding techniques. Participants may join at any time in the cycle and classes are not sequential.

Registration is not necessary. Walk-ins are welcomed. For more information, call 723-0375.

2 ACLS recertification classes offered

WELLSBORO - Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital will hold two, one-day recertification Advance Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) classes from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 14 and Nov. 15 in the conference room.

The course provides registered nurses, physicians and paramedics the knowledge and skills needed to evaluate and manage the first 10 minutes of an adult ventricular fibrillation/ventricular tachycardia (VF/VT) arrest. The instructors will be Dr. Donald Shaw and Linda Patterson.

Lung disease support group sets meeting

WELLSBORO - On Nov. 15, the American Lung Association's Better Breathers, a free support group for people with lung disease, meets at 6:30 p.m. in Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital's board room. The guest speaker will be from the Area Agency on Aging.

The free support group meets the third Thursday of each month. No registration is necessary; walk-ins welcome. Presented in cooperation with Blue Ribbon Foundation of Blue Cross of North Eastern PA.

Stabilization training offered

WELLSBORO - Faculty from Geisinger Medical Center's Outreach Education will present a free S.T.A.B.L.E. course to nurses, physicians, and ancillary healthcare staff from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 16 in the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital board room.

S.T.A.B.L.E. addresses the care of sick infants and is intended for use following neonatal resuscitation provided in the delivery room.
