MANSFIELD - Asia R. Campbell, 19, of Maple Manor Room 405 A, and Sjade N. Arp, 19, of 20 College Place, Laurel Dorm, A Side, Room 418, on the university campus were charged by university police following an altercation Nov. 5 at the Kelchner Fitness Center, Clinton Street.
According to documents filed at District Judge James Carlson's office, they each were charged with simple assault and disorderly conduct after police were called to a disturbance at a student activity being held at the fitness center.
Police said Campbell and Arp participated in a sparring activity in an inflatable enclosure, in which they were allowed to box each other while wearing protective head gear and gloves.
Prior to the incident, both were to stop participating if either felt that it was too rough, head gear fell off, if either fell down or against the netting, or if they were told to stop by the games moderator, Kaitlin Keiper.
Shortly after the bout began, both helmets came off and they both continued fighting beyond the parameters of the rules, hitting and kicking at each other, police said. They were told to stop but didn't and knocked Keiper down, as well.
Each was released on $2,500 bail. Their preliminary hearings were set for Nov. 14.
