City pools iffy proposition for now and future years

November 9, 2012
Williamsport Sun-Gazette

City Council last week approved the use of $250,000 in the community development budget for improvements to the East End Pool at a time when the City of Williamsport is closing the Memorial Park and East End Pools because of budgetary concerns.

The funding approval doesn't necessarily mean the work will be done.

If the city can't obtain a matching $250,000 federal grant from the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, the work probably won't be done.

Count all of this as a casualty of the city's budget limitations, which are only apt to get more pronounced in the future.

As we've said in the past, the community pool, which was once a staple of municipal services, is apt to become a private funding responsibility if it is to survive in the future.
