Free memory screening planned today

KULPMONT - In recognition of National Memory Screening Day, LIFE Geisinger will hold a free memory screening event and open house at its day health center, 1100 Spruce St., Suite 100, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today.

Screenings will take just a few minutes and consist of a series of questions and tasks. Attendees also may tour the facility, learn more about LIFE Geisinger, and enjoy light refreshments during an open house the same day.

LIFE Geisinger serves the frail elderly in the community through on-site daily services at its day health centers in Kulpmont and Scranton or in the individual's own home. The program focuses on the medical, social and behavioral issues of local seniors, and meets national standards to care for those with dementia disorders.

Evangelical selling flu, pneumonia vaccinations

SELINSGROVE - Evangelical Community Hospital will hold a flu and pneumonia vaccination clinic from 10 a.m. to noon today at the Susquehanna Valley Mall, Boscov's North Court.

Vaccinations are available for a fee to individuals 3 years and older. Bring insurance cards.

Evangelical schedules health education classes

Evangelical Community Hospital will hold a series of classes through the month of November. Fees may apply. Classes include:

Today - Diabetes Education Day, 8 a.m.-1 p.m. at Boscov's North Court, Selinsgrove. Diabetic vendors will be at the event until 1 p.m. and screenings will be available until 10 a.m.

Wednesday - Teen Prepared Childbirth Class, 4-8:30 p.m. at the Community Health Education Center. The course, for all expectant teen parents (or support person) during the last three months of pregnancy, prepares parents for the physical and emotional effects of labor and delivery.

Wednesday - Health care Provider CPR Class, 6-10 p.m. at the Community Health Education Center. The four-hour American Heart Association course is for the healthcare provider in and out of hospital settings in need of CPR certification. Students will learn how to initiate the Chain of Survival, perform prompt, high quality chest compressions for adult, child, and infant victims, initiate early use of an AED and much more.

Saturday - Weekend Express Class, 9-4 p.m. at the Community Health Education Center. Designed for the busy parents-to-be who are unable to attend the weekly Prepared Childbirth sessions.

Monday and Nov. 26 - Newborn Care, 7-9 p.m. at the Community Health Education Center. Teaches caregivers how to diaper, bathe and feed the baby and covers post-partum depression and care of the new mother.

Free memory screening offered

WELLSBORO - Are you concerned about memory problems? Get screened. The Laurels Personal Care Home in Wellsboro will hold free memory screenings from 8 to 10 a.m. today as part of National Memory Screening Day, a national initiative by the Alzheimer's Foundation of America.

Appointments are not necessary; walk-ins welcomed.

The event also will provide an opportunity to learn more about Alzheimer's disease, aging and community resources.

Class planned for Expectant Parents

WELLSBORO - Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital will hold a free Expectant Parents class titled "Labor Preparation and Comfort Techniques" from 7 to 8:30 p.m. tonight in the board room.

Attendees will learn about relaxation techniques, breathing exercises and position changes. The class is designed to enhance comfort during pregnancy and labor as well as provide suggestions for the mother's support person.

The class is part of a cycle of classes addressing the various concerns of expectant parents, including labor preparation, physical and emotional changes, infant care and feeding techniques.

Registration is not necessary. Walk-ins are welcomed. For more information, call 723-0375.

2 ACLS recertification classes offered

WELLSBORO - Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital will hold two, one-day recertification Advance Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) classes from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday in the conference room.

The course provides registered nurses, physicians and paramedics the knowledge and skills needed to evaluate and manage the first 10 minutes of an adult ventricular fibrillation/ventricular tachycardia (VF/VT) arrest. The instructors will be Dr. Donald Shaw and Linda Patterson.

Better Breathers meets next week

WELLSBORO - The American Lung Association's Better Breathers, a free support group for people with lung disease, meets at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital's board room. The guest speaker will be from the Area Agency on Aging.

The free support group meets the third Thursday of each month. No registration is necessary.

Stabilization training offered

WELLSBORO - Faculty from Geisinger Medical Center's Outreach Education will present a free S.T.A.B.L.E. course to nurses, physicians, and ancillary health care staff from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday in the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital board room.

S.T.A.B.L.E. addresses the care of sick infants and is intended for use following neonatal resuscitation provided in the delivery room. Topics include making appropriate and timely decisions regarding infant care, post-neonatal resuscitation procedures and pre-transport stabilization. Participants must have a current textbook.

Danville Careworks clinic plans open house

DANVILLE - Geisinger Careworks Urgent Care walk-in clinic will hold an open house from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday in the Danville Weis Market Plaza, 604 Continental Blvd.

The first 100 people in attendance will receive a free gift at the event, which will feature children's activities, a live radio remote by 94KX, refreshments and more. Everyone also may register to win a free iPad.

Geisinger Careworks Urgent Care clinics treat acute illnesses and minor injuries such as allergies, asthma, burns, colds, cuts, fevers and sprains, helping patients avoid unnecessary emergency room visits. Patients will have access to services including immunizations, labs, X-rays, EKG and IV therapy.

The Danville walk-in clinic will be staffed from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. seven days a week. No appointment is necessary.

Soldiers and Sailors hospital plans open house

WELLSBORO - Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital will hold an open house from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday to celebrate the completion of its new same-day surgery unit.

Attendees may tour the new patient rooms, endoscopy suite, nurses' stations, infusion/transfusion station and isolation, registration and expanded waiting rooms. Staff will demonstrate state-of-the-art technology and specialty equipment as well as answer any questions the public might have about the new addition.

The first floor houses the new emergency department, which opened on Jan. 10, and the second floor houses a new same-day surgery unit, which officially will go into service next Tuesday.
