Sun-Gazette headline, July 7: Stevens Elementary on list of worst-achieving schools in the state. Fast-foward to November 5 headline: Stevens Elementary recognized as 1 of 113 Distinguished Schools in the state. Apparently, the same Department of Education officials deeming Stevens as one of the worst, have now decided it is one of the best. How can that be?
One must only look at our state government for the answer. Mainly, a governor who continues to try every means possible to rate schools as underachieving so he can push through his school voucher plan, which has been continually defeated. Anyone who has had experience with Stevens and the dedicated staff working there knows it is an excellent school. Financially disadvanatged? Yes. However, leaders who continue to equate financially disadvantaged to failure have no right to lead. As the saying goes: Those who can, teach. Those who cannot, pass laws about teaching.
