From the sidelines

November 19, 2012
By TRENT STATTS - Grade 5 (education@sungazette.com) , Williamsport Sun-Gazette

This year, a great opportunity came my way. I was asked by our Hughesville High School Varsity Football Coach to be one of the ball boys.

Every Friday night, my mom drops me off at the high school. I then go the locker room with the varsity players to get ready. I also ride the bus with them during an away game.

My duties are filling the water bottles, giving the ball to the referee when needed, putting the ball at the post nearest to where they scored, get the tee after the kick off, and give the players water during timeouts.

Trent Statts is a ball boy for the Hughesville High School varsity football team.

I get to talk to the football players while I'm in the locker room. They are all really nice to me and it's so cool they know my name.

Before every game starts, I get to run out on the field with the football players. After we run on the field I get to stand on the sideline with the varsity players and the coaches.

It is really awesome to get to stand that close and watch the game. Sometimes a player gets tackled inches away from me!

I also play football and getting to watch the game up close helps me learn plays and helps me prepare for what it will be like playing high school football.

I think being a ball boy has lots of opportunities I'm learning a lot, plus it's so much fun.

I hope to continue being a ball boy next year.
