Mike Muscala poured in 24 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead Bucknell to a 62-49 victory over defending Western Athletic Conference champion New Mexico State on Saturday afternoon at the Gallagher Center on day two of the 2K Sports Classic.
Bryson Johnson added 11 points, Joe Willman 10, and the Bison got a huge lift from its bench down the stretch to help the Bison improve to 4-0.
Muscala fell one rebound shy of his fourth straight double-double to start the season, but he recorded his 26th career 20-point game on an 11 for 19 shooting night against the Aggies' massive front line. Willman added six rebounds and freshman Dom Hoffman played critical late-game minutes and finished with four points and five rebounds.
Penn College lost 107-61 to Montclair State in the consolation game of the Susquehanna University Pepsi Tip-Off Tournament. Sophomores Scott Fenton, Jesse Newman and freshman Christopher Carrington led with Wildcats (0-3) with nine points each.
Lock Haven fell 86-76 to Chestnut Hill College (2-2) on the final day of the Wolf's Bus Lines Classic hosted by Shippensburg University.
Lock Haven's Kasheef Festus led all scorers with 25 points.
In college cross country, Mansfield's Jess Scordino became the third women's runner in school history to earn All-American honors with a 24th-place finish at the NCAA Division II National Cross Country Championship held at Missouri Southern State University in Joplin, Mo.
Scordino, who joins Charity Learn and Brenae Edwards as the third All-American in school history, finished with a time of 21 minutes, 8.01 seconds over the 6K course. Alicia Nelson of Adams State finished first in the 249-runner field with a time of 20:03.3.
Mansfield's Kristy Scordino finished 14th overall to earn All-East honors at the 104th annual IC4A/ECAC Cross Country Championship in Van Cortlandt Park.
Running against an all NCAA Division field, Scordino covered the course in a time of 18:57.6. Bethany Sactleben of George Mason won the event with a time of 18:04.3.
Senior Kait Chegwidden was 74th overall in a field of 177 runners ending her collegiate career with a time of 20:08.4. Junior Savannah Boucher was 80th at 20:13.2.
Junior Kristen Von Beveren was 160th (22:48.3) and Rachael Tylock 171st (4:53.8).
Despite competing without their top runner Jess Scordino who finished 24th at the NCAA Division II National Championship, Mansfield finished 15th overall in the 19 team Division I field with 401 points.
Will Jones capped off an excellent freshman season finishing 47th overall in the 151-runner men's field with a time of 27:25.7. Sophomore Will Mullen was 57th at 27:41.3 while sophomores Jacob Portock and Eric Scherer were 129th (30:08.8) and 133rd (30:28.9) respectively
Alex Monroe finished fifth in 29:18.6 to lead the Lock Haven men at the 2012 NCAA Division II National Championships.
Monroe also became the first Bald Eagle to become a three-time cross country All-American.
In college wrestling, Penn College notched two wins as it hosted a Penn State University Athletic Conference tri-match. The Wildcats took down Penn State Beaver 42-0 and then won 40-9 over Penn State Mont Alto. Junior Tyler Myers (continued his strong start to the season going 2-0 with two pins. His record for the year improves to 7-1 with seven pins. In addition, the wins improve the team to 3-5 overall and 2-0 in the PSUAC.
Bucknell freshman Paul Petrov advanced to the championship bout of the 133-pound bracket, while Corey Lear (165) and Tyler Lyster (197) lost in the semifinals, but battled back to earn third-place finishes to highlight the season-opening Navy Classic for the Bucknell wrestling team. The Bison finished sixth of nine teams in the standings.
The third-seeded Petrov earned a first-round bye and the won a pair of bouts by decision to advance to the finals. There, he lost to Navy's Colton Rasche, the top seed in the field, by an 8-5 decision. Petrov is now 7-2 on the young season thanks to a 5-1 record in unattached tournaments.
Lycoming junior Greg Wetzel reached the quarterfinals of the 165-pound bracket to lead the Warriors at the East Stroudsburg Open.
Wetzel posted a pair of wins to open his run at the tournament, beating North Carolina's Scott Marmoll, 3-1, and Anthony Paun of The College of New Jersey, 2-1, before falling in the quarterfinals.
At 149 pounds, freshman Matt Neff posted four wins, beating Penn State's David Owens, 7-5, before falling into the consolation bracket. After an injury default, Neff posted a 4-3 win over Millersville's Aaron Trimpey and a 6-5 win over East Stroudburg's Tyler Wilton.
In women's basketball, with the help of 18 points and 13 rebounds from sophomore MacKenzie Brown, Penn College defeated Central Penn College 84-66.
Also for the Wildcats (2-1), freshmen Danielle Mowery and Jamie Steer each had 16 points while sophomore Jenna Matzinger had 12 and senior Kierstin Steer had 10.
Alyssa Dunn recorded a career-best 22 points, sparking Bucknell women's basketball to a 59-50 win over Canisius at the Keossler Athletic Center. The victory gives head coach Aaron Roussell his first win as Bison head coach.
In college swimming, Lock Haven closed out a strong three days of competition with a number of strong individual efforts at the John A. Pidgeon Memorial Invitational, hosted by IUP.
Senior Brittany Rehrig closed out a strong three days with a win in the 100-yard freestyle. She won in a PSAC-qualifying time of 52.82, which was a new personal-best.
Allie Muha and Kristin Taylor finished 1-2 in the 200-yard butterfly. Muha and Taylor, who were seeded 1-2 heading into the finals, hit PSAC marks of 2:14.56 and 2:15.70, respectively.
In college volleyball, Lock Haven dropped a five-set thriller to Gannon (20-25, 20-25, 25-16, 25-16 and 15-8) in the PSAC championship match at Gannon.
