The Friends of the James V. Brown Library will feature "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens as the featured book for the December book review program.
The luncheon will begin at noon Dec. 7 in the third-floor Lowry Room of the Welch Family Wing with the program starting at 12:30 p.m.
Excerpts from the book, along with background information about Dickens and his work, will be presented by Dr. N.J. Stanley, chairwoman of the Theater Department at Lycoming College. Stanley has a master of fine arts from Florida State University and a Ph.D. from Indiana University.
Born in New Orleans, Stanley was the youngest of five children. When she was 5 years old, an older brother and sister taught her to sing and dance to Rodgers and Hammerstein music. Her participating as a youngster in talent shows performing to Broadway songs soon followed. She fell in love with the theater, acting and directing, and is enthusiastically involved to this day.
Book Review Luncheons are open to the public and are free of charge unless participants choose to order the light lunch that is available. The lunches cost $5 each and can be reserved by calling the library Information Desk at 326-0536 no later than 3 p.m. the Wednesday before the luncheon. Bag lunch or takeouts are welcome.
The next Book Review Luncheon will be held on the first Friday of February.
