Hurricane Sandy demonstrated once again that being armed and protecting one's life and liberty is as essential today as it was during Colonial times, when people depended totally upon firearms for their protection. Today, the sheep of our society believe the shepherds, "police," should protect them from the wolves, "criminals and looters," even though they are too few and only duty-bound to protect the general public, not individual citizens.
Hurricane Sandy should be a wake up-call for all citizens who are unable to protect themselves, their families and homes during natural disasters, terrorist attacks, or economic collapse for they will be at the mercy of armed criminals and looters. When police protection was lacking during Hurricane Andrew and the Los Angles riots, armed citizens protected their lives and property by displaying signs informing criminals and looters that they would be shot.
The Declaration of Independence proclaims "all men are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, among those are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." The Constitution provides Americans with a safeguard against government's abuse of power, our Bill of Rights restricts government from violating our guaranteed individual rights, and the right to keep and bear arms provides the people with the ultimate means of preserving those basic liberties from threatening criminals, standing armies, and an oppressive government.
Samuel Adams stated "the three natural rights of the colonists were first, a right to life, secondly, to liberty, thirdly, to property, together with the right to support and defend them." If Americans continue to cede their individual responsibilities and the means of defending their lives and liberty to the government and police, we will become a nation of sheep, not of men, and witness our basic constitutional rights being converted into government privileges without the Second Amendment.
