The Williamsport Municipal Water and Sanitary Authority is transitioning from manually-read meters to automated meters.
Doug Keith, authority executive director, told the authority Wednesday automated meters provide a more accurate account of quarterly reads of water use and what is flowing out of the filter plants.
Keith said automation gives the authority improved ability to match filter plan flows with meter consumption and identify leaks sooner.
The authority has 6,400 metered customers that require manual checks but is transitioning 800 to 1,000 meters to an automatic reading system each year, Keith said.
Another matter addressed Wednesday was impact of construction price increases on the authority as it oversees a $120 million upgrade of the Central Treatment Plant.
The upgrades are being done so the authority complies with federal and state environmental regulations designed to help clean up the Chesapeake Bay.
