MONTGOMERY - While shoplifting inside the Uni-Mart on South Main Street, Ezekial M. Rodarte's SUV rolled backwards out of the parking lot, drifted across the street and crashed into a tree while a small child was in the vehicle, borough police alleged in court papers.
Rodarte, 21, of Watsontown, ran to the vehicle, jumped in and fled the scene just after crash, which occurred about 5:45 p.m. on Oct. 9, police said. There was no information about whether the child, believed to be 3 or 4 years old, was hurt.
Police said Rodarte allegedly stole a $2 item from the store. The entire incident was caught on store video, police said. Charged with shoplifting and four summary violations, including hit-run and driving with a suspended license, Rodarte has been sent a summons to appear before District Judge Jon E. Kemp.
