Dear Santa,
With the recent storm of Hurricane Sandy, The Salvation Army went into battle mode preparing for the weather.
The captains were on call and Capt. Chas was even sent to an area of the country where the storm was to be the worst.
Staff fielded calls and made plans to provide meals at a make-shift shelter set up by the Red Cross if needed.
One call, in particular, made me realize how much the past year and a half of weather has made its impact on the community.
Helen, an elderly woman, called because she lives by herself and was, "petrified" by the news reports of the storm.
Her husband recently passed away and she has no family in the area.
She was concerned about a tree falling down on her property and being trapped in her house without help.
As we talked the situation out, she did have a caretaker checking on her later that day and just needed to talk through a plan of action.
Now that the storm is over and the woman is safe, it made me realize that sometimes people need The Salvation Army for assurance that they will be alright in an emergency.
This woman turned to the "Red Shield" to calm her nerves during the recent storm.
I was happy to represent an organization that is so meaningful to our community.
