Program jeopardized

December 8, 2012
Williamsport Sun-Gazette

I attended a Pennsylvania State Head Start Conference this week and here is what I learned.

Did you know that if there is no resolution by Dec. 31st to the state budget that there will be a mandatory 8.2 percent cut to Head Start and Early Head Start children?

This is equivalent to 2,160 Head Start Children and 360 Early Head Start Children who will lose benefits from this family program. Thanks to the great staff at St. John's, my kindergartner was better prepared and is performing academically well.

He has learned more than just his ABC's, he has gained social and emotional skills for life. Please protect Head Start in budget negotiations. Please call your members of Congress toll free at

Please end the irresponsible extra tax breaks for the wealthiest 2 percent and protect low-income and vulnerable people, invest in jobs, and seek responsible savings by targeting waste in the Pentagon. Don't cut vital priorities like Head Start, Medicaid, food stamps, Unemployment Insurance, education, and housing.
