Preserve Head Start

December 14, 2012
Williamsport Sun-Gazette

Head Start has helped my family with getting my son to play with others and not just by himself. He has really started to open up since starting in September.

My son has started to count above 10. He is learning about letters and recognizing his own name. If I didn't have access to this program he would not be as far academically. He won't be open to trying new things and new foods.

If we had cuts to our center. I'm sure we would be losing great staff and the children would really be losing out on a great program. I did not know all the Head Start has to offer until we were a part of the program. It's amazing the opportunities that our children have being a part of the program. It's more than learning shapes and letters.

It teaches them to become friends with their classmates. I was in his classroom when they learned about fire safety and watching the children get excited and putting on the fireman uniforms was amazing. If we didn't have the program my son wouldn't know what to do in case of emergency. With the fiscal cliff looming on Dec. 31st, we would be in jeopardy of losing 2160 Head Start and 360 Early Head Start spots for children and families. We really can't afford to lose this program.
