Community parks

December 19, 2012
Williamsport Sun-Gazette

I've been a longtime resident of Williamsport. As a child I enjoyed Memorial and Brandon Park. One of my favorite things to do in the summer was to go to Brandon Park and enjoy the music being played in the bandshell. Those are days of the past. If you've never been to the Lewisburg Area Recreation Park, you should go there and check it out. It's a beautiful park, peaceful, fun, and well thought out. The park puts to shame the parks we have here in Williamsport.

With all this "community upgrading", perhaps it's time to do some upgrading to Memorial Park. Including the pools that they are now going to be shutting down. I can't speak for everyone and I would agree that perhaps there are more important issues at stake, but while the city is busy upgrading the community for the outsiders the insiders could use an upgrade too. I believe if people were asked to make donations for a significant park upgrade, they'd come forward to do so. I also believe that if you asked people for input on how to upgrade the park, you would get an overwhelming amount of opinions, all which would lead to a fabulous park, the likes of which Williamsport has never seen before.

It's long overdue for the time in which our city starts thinking about its own citizens and more specifically the child-citizens of this city. In this period of time, perhaps a park upgrade seems like such a meaningless issue, but I for one am a parent. I can tell you personally, when I take my child to the Lewisburg park and play on the playground with him, watch the ducks from the small bridge, relax for a picnic in the grass, the smile on his face, says it's anything but meaningless. It's time to start giving back for the sake of our children.
