WELLSBORO - Christopher C. Hall, 27, of Galeton, was charged by Gaines Township police with possession of a firearm with an altered number and receiving stolen property after a traffic stop on Route 6 in Gaines Township Dec. 11.
According to documents filed at District Judge Rob Repard's office, police saw a Smith and Wesson .38-caliber pistol in Hall's car after he was stopped because police recognized him as being wanted as a suspect in the robbery of a gun store in Gaines.
According to police, when officers spotted the weapon, Hall made a sudden move toward it but stopped when commanded to do so. Closer inspection revealed that the serial number had been ground off, police said, and the accused had no license to carry a weapon in Pennsylvania.
Police said the weapon also was loaded with five rounds in the cylinder.
Police said four digits were recognizable and matched a gun stolen from the shop. The rest of the weapon was described as covered with camouflaged tape in an attempt to cover the manufacturer's name.
Hall was jailed in lieu of $40,000 bail and his preliminary hearing was continued to Jan. 8.
