Homeless trespasser taken into custody

December 21, 2012
Williamsport Sun-Gazette

A homeless man was taken into custody, after allegedly refusing to exit Wegmans in the city on Dec. 16.

Roger Fontaine, 56, has been charged with one misdemeanor count of criminal trespassing and one summary count of criminal mischief.

According to court records, police were called to the business by employee Dave Proetta, who explained that Fontaine had been asked several times to leave.

Each time, Fontaine refused. Eventually, he allegedly picked up a potted plant, worth about $17, and smashed it on the floor.

Fontaine allegedly told officers that he refused to leave the store because he had nowhere else to go, according to court records.

A similar incident took place in March, when Fontaine allegedly entered another local business and threatened to steal merchandise if the clerk didn't call police.

Fontaine was arraigned before District Judge Jerry C. Lepley on Dec. 16. He since has been incarcerated in lieu of $2,500 bail.
