Earlier this month, President Obama significantly expanded the role of the Defense Intelligence Agency. This enabled the agency to expand its agents from just a few hundred overseas today to eventually 1,600. The nature of these agents' work will also change. They will shift away from intelligence collection to more covert operations. Unfortunately, this is in response to the never-ending "War on Terror". Attacks on foreign countries will increase as a result but it will occur under the cover of darkness outside of the American publics' awareness. One would be hard-pressed to see a line between military and intelligence services of the DIA and CIA. The CIA is becoming more like a secret military unto itself.
The CIA runs the military, drone program, and are involved in drug trafficking. Was there a coup in this country? The DIA is operationally under control of the Pentagon; therefore, expect a veil of secrecy over this agency. Is this accidental? The CIA will be training DIA agents in its facilities to conduct operations overseas. Much of this program will include developing targets for the president's ever expanding drone warfare campaign. In Pakistan, President Obama, in his first four years, authorized six times more drone strikes than under all of eight years under the Bush Administration. Nearly 3,000 individuals have been killed, many non-combatants.
With more DIA spies to go with their CIA counterparts, expect more coups and covert wars in foreign lands. Congress, as usual, remains silent.
