Prison logic needed

December 30, 2012
Williamsport Sun-Gazette

Lycoming County prison is full; people are sleeping under the stairs and they're sending inmates to Centre and Clinton County prisons. However, there are people in there and I know at least one that really don't pose a threat to society and don't need to be there.

I have also read in the newspaper that 85 people were sentenced to county prison last week, mostly for minor drug charges! These people do not pose any threat to our city; they are just a small representation of a bigger picture; rampant drug use in America. Locking these people up will do no good for them or our city. The drugs will not stop, and if you want your citizens to stop doing so many drugs, make this town a better place to live with more to do!

I know the city has done a lot to encourage small business and the arts, but I believe we could do more to unite and desegregate the many cultures of Williamsport. I firmly believe the police force in this city is too large, and that they are targeting the wrong people.

I don't want to live in a police state; that is not my idea of a utopia, which we should all aim for in a community. Williamsport, stop being so afraid!
