The news coming from Newtown Conn. was absolutely horrifying. As I listened to the news reports and each report became more devastating. To have 6- and 7-year-old children getting slaughtered along with their teachers is not acceptable.
Put yourself in the role as a parent hearing the news and going to the school and waiting for a few hours before finding out that your child has been killed. You send your children to school an hour or so before this happened and they never come back home.
Another scenario is children that escaped the shooting but knew that other children were killed that were their friends and also their teachers who were trying to protect them.
I totally agree that they need to address the gun laws and certainly don't need to have ammunition for the guns that shoot 20 to 30 rounds. I know very little about guns but we need to get in touch with the people in Washington to get gun laws in tact. I realize that mental health also plays a big part in what happened, but I am not sure how to deal with that problem.
I really believe that the one thing in the schools should be resource officers placed in the schools. I know that they had security in place but this person shot his way into the school or else just broke the glass in the door.
Had there been a Resource Officer in place that day he would have been in the hall and could have stopped the person with the gun even if he had to shot him. That seems very harsh but it could have saved all those children and teachers from being killed.
My prayers go out to all the families that have been effected by this horrible person. This could have happened in our community so it would be helpful if at school meetings this subject would be brought up. I know that Williamsport High School has an resource officer but we should look at all the schools.
