Harold E. Swisher

Harold E. "Sonny" Swisher, 84, a resident of Montgomery, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012, in the Muncy Valley Hospital Skilled Nursing Unit. Born in Clinton Township, Lycoming County, Pa., on Monday, Oct. 8, 1928, he was the son of the late Reuben and Susie (Bennett) Swisher.

Sonny was the widower of Eleanor J. (Sticklin) Swisher who preceded him in death on April 22, 2010. Her death broke a marital union of 58 years.

He honorably served during the Korean Conflict with the U.S. Army. Sonny was the owner-operator of Swishers Disposal Service. He was a former Clinton Township supervisor for 24 years and township roadmaster and was a co-owner of the former S & W Landfill at Montgomery.

Sonny was a member of the First United Methodist Church at Montgomery. He was a life member of the Clinton Township Volunteer Fire Co., a former forest fire warden, a member of the Watsontown American Legion, the Milton Moose Lodge and the Central District Fireman's Association. He enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening, hunting and fishing and tinkering in the garage. He especially enjoyed being with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Connie J. and Dale Eveland, Montgomery; one son, Ronald D. Swisher, Montgomery; four grandchildren, Tara (Doug) Freeman, Gillette, Christopher Swisher, Montgomery, Eric (Nikki) Eveland, Montgomery, Bryan (Fancy) Eveland, Waterville; six great-grandchildren, Willow Eveland, Keegan Freeman, Mackenzie Eveland, Ridge Eveland, Mikayla Eveland, Breeze Eveland; one sister-in-law, Romayne Swisher, Montgomery. Sonny is also survived by two nieces, Cheryl Gansell and Linda Miller. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by one sister, Mary L. Kramer and one brother, Robert R. Swisher.

Funeral services will be conducted from the Galen R. Betzer Funeral Service, 108 N. Main Street, Muncy, at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 28, 2012, with Michael Hill, pastor of the Elimsport United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will be in the Green Lawn Memorial Park. Friends may call on Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Graveside military honors will be accorded by the joint veterans organizations. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Clinton Township Volunteer Fire Co., 2311 Route 54 Highway, Montgomery, PA 17752 or to the Wilkes-Barre VA Medical Center, 1111 East End Blvd., Wilkes-Barre, PA 18711 or to the Susquehanna Home Hospice, 1100 Grampian Blvd., Williamsport, PA 17701.
